Microblading is a semi-permanent, natural looking solution for spare or thinning brows or to help achieve better brow symmetry.

At Avani Derm Spa, we perform customized microblading in St. Louis.

What is Microblading?

Microblading is a manual, semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that uses a specialized handheld tool to deposit pigment into the upper dermis of the skin. Unlike a traditional tattoo machine, this technique creates fine, hair-like strokes that mimic the natural growth pattern of the eyebrow.

What are the Benefits of Microblading?

While the primary goal is aesthetic improvement, the practical benefits of this treatment go beyond just "looking good."

  • Waterproof & Smudge-Proof: St. Louis humidity or a session at the gym will no longer compromise your brows.
  • Symmetry Correction: We use the Golden Ratio to balance uneven brows, correcting minor asymmetries in your facial structure.
  • Natural Appearance: Because the strokes are manually drawn to match your hair growth direction, the result is indistinguishable from real hair, unlike the solid "block" look of older tattoo methods.
  • Time Savings: You wake up with your face already "framed," eliminating a significant step in your daily regimen.

Ideal Microblading Candidates

Microblading is recommended if you are unhappy with your sparse eyebrow hair and want fuller eyebrows. People suffering from a condition called madarosis (loss of eyebrow hair) are also good candidates for microblading.

Who is NOT a Good Fit?

Transparency is critical to our safety protocols. We may turn away patients or suggest alternatives if:

  • You have oily skin or large pores: Excess oil production can cause the crisp hair strokes to blur and expand over time. For these patients, we often recommend Powder Brows or a hybrid approach for better longevity.
  • You are pregnant or nursing: We do not perform procedures during this time due to safety standards.
  • You have a history of keloids: Creating micro-injuries in the skin poses a risk for those prone to keloid scarring.

The Microblading

Procedure

Before the microblading session, St. Louis Microblading patients will choose a pigment color for their brows.

Microblading involves making small cuts in the skin using a microblading tool, which has a cluster of very small needles protruding from one end. After making the cuts, the chosen pigment is inserted into them by the technician, gradually creating the appearance of eyebrow hairs.

The microblading pigment lasts up to 5 years with touch-ups needed at 6-12 month intervals.

Recovery After Microblading

For a microblading procedure to be successful, the recovery process is vital. This is a "dry heal" process, meaning you must keep the area dry and clean to allow the pigment to settle.

Social vs. Physical Downtime: You are "restaurant ready" immediately, provided you don't mind your brows looking bolder than usual.

  • Days 1–4: The brows will appear significantly darker and sharper than the final result. This is oxidation. Do not panic; they will fade by 30-40%.
  • Days 5–10: You may experience light flaking or itchiness. Do not pick the flakes. Picking pulls the pigment out and creates patchy results.
  • The "Ghosting" Phase: Around day 12, the color may seem to disappear or look milky. This is new skin regenerating over the pigment. The color will re-emerge as the skin settles.

Microblading Results

Patience is key. Full microblading healing takes roughly 25 to 30 days. At this point, the true color and definition are visible.

  • Longevity: Results typically last 12 to 18 months. Factors like sun exposure, skincare products (retinols/acids), and skin type influence this timeline.
  • Maintenance: A "Perfection Visit" is required 6-8 weeks after the initial appointment to fill in any gaps. Afterward, annual touch-ups keep the strokes crisp.

Microblading

Frequently Asked Questions

We use a prescription-strength topical numbing cream. During microblading St. Louis patients typically rate the discomfort around a 2 out of 10, often describing the sensation as light scratching rather than sharp pain.

Not on the brows. You must keep the brow area free of makeup, sunscreen, and skincare products for at least 10 days to prevent infection. You can wear face makeup everywhere else.

Microblading may not heal with crisp strokes on oily skin. We often recommend "Ombre Powder Brows" for our oily-skinned patients in St. Louis, as this technique shades the brow for a soft, makeup-like look that lasts longer.

No. Please do not wax, thread, or shave your brows for at least 3 days prior. We want to see your natural hair growth pattern to integrate the new strokes seamlessly.
